InDesign Keyboard Shortcuts – Why You Need to Use Them
As you may well be aware, InDesign is an application produced by Adobe and is used by professional Graphic Designers and Production Artists to lay out artwork for projects such as books, catalogues, magazines, newspaper, posters, flyers and brochures. The program has the grunt to allow the designer to produce big jobs which could involve an even bigger time frame. In this instance, most designers are looking to speed up their work, this is where keyboard shortcuts come in.
What is a keyboard shortcut?
A keyboard shortcut lets you work on the program without having to take your hands off the keyboard to use the mouse. The idea is for you to press or hold down a combination of keystrokes which then will initiate a particular command in InDesign to proceed with a specific task. You are then able to work faster which ultimately increases your efficiency level. If you work in a deadline driven environment like I do, knowing your shortcuts and applying them quickly while you work will enhance your productivity by at least 10 times.
Is it easy to learn keyboard shortcuts in InDesign?
You might have noted already that InDesign has keyboard shortcuts for every tool in the Tool panel. Do you have to learn them all? No! Just memorise the tools that you use on a regular basis, that should be a sufficient start as it will save you time as it is. Here is a tip: Just hover your mouse over the tool panel and you should see a one-letter shortcut associated with that tool. Check out the Menu panel as well. You will find many shortcuts set as default by InDesign and ready for you to use.
Practise, Practise, Practise
To be a real master or expert, I encourage you to learn as you go. In this case, practise really does make perfect. Make it a habit to learn and use these shortcuts continually. By no means the keyboard shortcuts will replace the mouse. It is in the combination of using both the mouse and these keystrokes that you will realise the output potential of your work.
Benefits
As you will be using less and less of your mouse, one other benefit is it reduces the potential of injury to your shoulder or wrist. Your arm will not be at one position for a long period of time as you will need to move from mouse to keyboard and back to mouse again. The only time anyone might consider using the mouse is the only way to go is when the designer is working based on an hourly rate and find that efficiency is not an issue. But for others who experience constant deadlines with bosses breathing down your neck, you might find speeding up your work the only option for you. So there you go, besides boosting productivity, you now will also be able to reduce the likelihood of unnecessary injury to your body!
Once you start using the keyboard shortcuts in InDesign, I highly doubt you will ever go back to using just the mouse again. It is just one of those magnificent features in InDesign that helps you manage your workload faster and easier. Here’s a toast to efficiency, productivity and healthy shoulders and wrists! Clink!
