High blood pressure or hypertension means high pressure or tension within the arteries. Arteries are the vessels that carry blood from heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure usually has no visible symptoms. There are lots of people whose blood pressures are high, but they do not realize it until it is too late. For this reason, high blood pressure is also called as the silent killer. Hypertension damages the blood vessels. This in turn risks heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. What Causes High Blood Pressure?
For most people, the cause remains unknown, making primary blood pressure the more prevalent of the two. While it is not entirely known why primary high blood pressure occurs, research is ongoing and a number of factors have been implicated. Since high blood pressure often runs in families, a strong genetic component has been indicated.
Other risk factors for high blood pressure include smoking, alcoholism, high salt intake, being overweight, lack of exercise, and high levels of stress.
Some conditions known to cause secondary hypertension are: diabetic nephropathy, kidney disease, Cushing’s syndrome, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, arteriosclerosis (a thickening, hardening and narrowing of the walls of the arteries), underlying heart conditions, sleep apnea, obesity, pregnancy (especially in cases of pre-eclampsia) and side-effects of certain medications or supplements.
Risk factors
High blood pressure has another name and this is a ‘silent killer’ as this condition kills a person very quietly many a time without even knowing it. If you are having high BP along with daily habits of eating too much salt, smoking, drinking and not doing exercises can prove risky. Some medical conditions are sometime responsible for high blood pressure. Kidney disease, renal artery narrowing, sleeping apnea and Cushing’s disease can be responsible for producing high blood pressure.
Treatment of high BP
If you are caused by high blood pressure you must seek these treatments, as they can prove helpful in providing relief to the patient. Many people have lowered their blood pressure by changing the lifestyle and the conditions may be weight loss, doing more exercises, but you can get relief by taking medication to keep blood pressure controlled.
Reduce Blood Pressure
Here are a few other tips that are effective:
1. Avoid or reduce stress. Stress is a major cause of all types of illness and conditions. If you are stressed out, either remove the source of your stress or find ways to lessen it. Deep breathing, exercise and meditation work well.
2. Eat a healthy diet. Add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet, along with whole grains and spicy foods like garlic. Foods containing potassium and magnesium are especially good for hypertension.
3. Get up and move! Simply walking for 15 or 20 minutes per day can make a difference in blood pressure readings. Make time in your day for this healthy activity.
4. Now it is very important to understand that high consumption of salt is directly linked to high blood pressure. Commit yourself to consume not more than 2,000 milligrams of sodium per day, which estimates around 1 teaspoon of salt. You can lower your sodium intake by eating less processed and fast foods.
