Illinois Central Gulf
What happens to employees of of a company that is taken over by another?
I’m wondering what would have happened to a conductor on the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad when it merged with Illinois Central. Also, what would happen to him if the Railway retired a particular train?
I can’t say specifically with the companies and trains you’re talking about, but what happens varies a lot. The biggest factor is whether the buyer wants to merge the two companies together into a larger company vs. just wanting some specific asset(s) of the other company (such as a brand name for example). In the former case, most jobs would be kept (except probably a lot of jobs at the headquarters of the bought company), but in the latter case, most jobs in the bought company would go away.
