Are elipticals more of a machine for women? I feel like their not very manly and I should jog, but?

it hurts my back. Also, are they effective? And are you supposed to switch between the direction of motion?

They are a great machine and safer for the hips and knees. From what you are stating it sounds as if the machine is not set up for you correctly. Is this a home unit or a gym piece? Home units are not the best unless you are spending some large money. The commercial ones can be adjusted to fit what you are trying to accomplish. The settings on the machine are designed to target certain areas such as the gluteals or quads vs hamstrings. Take a look at the machine you are using and adjust it correctly. Also are you doing any stretching afterwards? That might also be part of the problem.
