Sighting in a ruger mini 14?

its one of the new ones with the thicker barrels (not a target model) and pictany rails.
how many feet should i sight it in with iron sights?
whats a good scope or optic to mount on it?
whats a good range to sight in said scope or optic?
any tips on sighting in rifles is appreciated

Make up your mind of you want to use a scope or stay with the iron sights. But let’s go with a scope. I prefer a fixed power and with a .223 I suggest a 6 power. Then go to a range and use a bench rest. Put a paper target at 25 yards then sight it in so it hits dead on at 25 yards. Then move the target out to 50 yards and repeat the process. Do this until you have gone out to 100 yards only have the rifle hit an inch high at that range.

I do this and anything 300 yards or closer I know I can aim right at my target and won’t have to mess with aiming high, low, left, right. etc., unless the weather conditions dictate. Different loads will have different results too. So find a load that you and the rifle like, sight in the weapon to that load then stick with it.

With a semi-auto rifle I recommend NOT using cast lead bullets without using gas checks on the base of the bullets. Without them you run the chance of fouling the chamber with lead and the weapon may not cycle because the lead bullet melts – slightly – and doesn’t allow enough back pressure through the operating system to cycle the action.

Above all exercise safety. Always use protective eye wear, hearing protection and shoot in a safe direction against a safe back stop.
