Railroad Sign
What does the term “bootleg” mean when referring to railroading?
The other day I was walking down some railroad tracks and found a sign that said “BOOTLEG” by the side of the tracks. I could tell it was put there by the railroad, but didn’t know what it meant. From what I gather from other websites, it has something to to with wiring or signals, which would make sense, because there were wires connected to the tracks and a signal box was nearby. I haven’t found anything truly helpful, though. Anybody know what this means?
Never even heard of such a sign. I looked it up all over google and found nothing. I think it might have to do with signal wiring though. It is a possibility I just don’t know. EDIT: Go with the Original Ken’s Answer. It is a great website.
