What can I do about my climbing baby?

She is 14 months and I think she’s going to be a mountineer! All she does ALL DAY is scale things….I take her into the garden and she tries to get on the picnic table via the bench! And she does not give in…but repeatedly climbs up. She goes on anything she can in the house to get to shelves and high up units…pushing coffee tables or small chairs along to use as a step. I am so worried that she will fall when I am busy! Any tips?

Whenever possible, rid her environment of climbing opportunities. My daughter is a climber as well, has been since the age of 8 months – at least, that was the first time she scaled the 2-1/2 foot wall of our Super Yard XT corral and fell over the side.

Our living room is down to our entertainment center, a couch and a sofa, and our end tables are backed in between them so she can’t get to them. We had to get rid of the coffee table temporarily. We have gates with bars that only go up and down, or ones that have solid plastic panels in them. She is only allowed to play with larger toys (the ones that can be used as step stools!) under careful supervision.
