Scale Figure Passenger
In the 20th century sci fi films used models for ships, so how did they make the people inside move?
I noticed that in 2001 space odyysey and numerous star trek films , that in wide angle shots of the spaceship models they have managed to make the pilots or passengers appear to move inside the craft, thus enhancing realism. In contrast the star wars films just used static figures, probably because the ships move so fast you wont have time to see the pilot adjusting his helmet or whatever. I am constantly fasinated to what i believe are effects superior to someof the cgi stuff, and my own theory maybe answering my own question is that they use mini tv screens are show pre recorded footage, and then they place the tv inside the model ship establishign the scale and tricking the eye.
Older films relied mainly on matte work. Rather than babble my way through an explanation, I rounded up links to sites that discuss the SFX of “2001″, which was a remarkable achievement for the Sixties. This book will answer all of your questions~if I recall correctly. My copy is packed with newspaper clippings and additional notes. As a sci fi fan in my late teens (1968), I LOVED this film, going to see it many times in a time period in which people rarely saw a film more than once in the theater. I think “2001″ is the film that changed our moviegoing habits, giving us a film that required multiple viewings to grasp even part of it.
