Enthusiasts who are new to the world of model trains and train sets may not know that it is hardly as simple as piecing the train itself together. There are quite a few other things that need to be considered in order for one to be able to come up with a truly memorable train set.
One of the most basic of these is of course one’s model-railroad track plan. This is of course the design of your train tracks – what shape they take, where they go, and so on and so forth.
The final shape and form of your track will be greatly affected by perhaps the single most important factor – how much space you can spare for it. It may help for you to use a measuring tape and see exactly how much space you have before you begin to work on your track plan.
Once you’ve done so, you can begin to think about how exactly you can have your train run – whether you would like it to do so continuously or from particular points to particular points – because this consideration would greatly affect the particular shape that you can choose. For instance, you could select such continuous-track shapes as a simple oval, a folded dogbone, a figure-eight – or many more if you would like your train to run continuously.
In the interest of authenticity, you may wish to setup what is called a railroad terminus or a train terminal (at the very least, the inner side of a building) where your train can stop. If that is the case you may wish to embellish such a setup with figures of people – passengers, officers and so on – and other things such as luggage for instance. You could also choose to setup a city around your train tracks – this would necessarily make things very complex as there would be so many elements you would need to fabricate or source, such as more people, cars, and buildings. And of course whatever your choice, you might elect to make it historically accurate – you will need to do extensive research if that is the case.
You will require easements for your final railroad track in order to help your train navigate curved areas – especially very curved or continuously curved areas. Many hobbyists risk derailing their trains if they fail to use easements. These aid trains when passing through curved areas by “easing” them in and out of such areas. In addition, you will also need to make use of tools such as turntables, reversing tracks and wyes to help your trains automatically rotate on the tracks without you having to turn them around manually. There are plenty of other important and necessary equipment you will need, such as ladders, team tracks, spurs, and conventional siding; further research is quite necessary.
Those new to the hobby may very well think that all these technical issues and details can serve to make it very hard to get into. But that is far from the truth, especially if one seeks out more experienced fellow hobbyists in order to elicit their advice and inputs.
